Today in sports history…July 3

Since tomorrow is Thursday, July 4, I thought I would write my piece of ‘Today in Sports History’ today on July 3. I am going very old school with this little bit of sports history. The date was July 3, 1912, and New York Giants pitcher Rube Marquard ties Tim Keefe 1888 record by winning 19 consecutive games. Went on to win 21 straight games counting the last two games of the 1911 season.

A little back ground on Marquard. He was born on October 9, 1886 in Cleveland, OH and died in Baltimore, MD on June 1, 1980. He was 93 years old. He pitched for four different teams in is MLB career going 201-177 with an ERA of 3.08 and 1,593 strikeouts. In Marquard’s 17 year career he pitched for:

New York Giants (1908-1915) MLB debut September 25, 1908

Brooklyn Robins (1915-1920)

Cincinnati Reds (1921)

Boston Braves (1922-1925) Last MLB appearance September 18, 1925
