Coming off the 20-17 overtime loss to the South Carolina Gamecocks, questions arose again on how good this 2019 Georgia Bulldogs football team is. Over the last three years there has been one team during the regular season that has caused a hiccup during the schedule. In 2017 It was a route by the Auburn Tigers at Jordan-Hare Stadium. In 2018, it was another route by the LSU Tigers in Baton Rouge that made the wheels come off, and this year at Sanford Stadium the South Carolina Gamecocks shocked the Georgia Bulldogs 20-17 in overtime play.
Back in 2017, the loss to Auburn didn’t derail the team as they turned around and beat the Auburn Tigers 21-7 to win the SEC Championship on their way to the National Championship where they were downed by the Alabama Crimson Tide 26-23 in a thriller. In 2018, the loss to LSU didn’t defeat the rest of the season as they went on to capture another SEC East title where they then loss again to Alabama, this time in the SEC Championship game 35-28.
For this year, the path is still laid out in front of them. Georgia currently holds a 9-1 overall, 6-1 conference record. Coming off the lost to South Carolina, the Bulldogs have had dominant wins against Florida, Missouri, and this past week at Auburn. A little breakdown of the Auburn game goes like this. Georgia takes a commanding 21-0 lead while playing man defense. In the fourth quarter, the team relaxes, plays conservative both on offense and then plays zone defense, while the Auburn Tigers score 14 points in about 3 minutes time. The Georgia Bulldogs go back to man defense to close the game out to win the SEC East title. Zone defenses give the opposing offense life, man defense puts more pressure on the opposing offense. Just my thoughts there.
The Bulldogs have two more regular season games left, a home contest against the Texas A&M Aggies then close out the season with a “Good Ole Fashioned Hate” game at cross state rival Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Just because the Bulldogs have their ticket to the SEC Championship game punched, doesn’t mean they need to let off the pedal with the last two games. Georgia needs to go into the championship game against the LSU Tigers on a winning note and full of confidence. If #4 Georgia wins out and beats #1 LSU, they are for sure to stay within the top four teams to play for the college championship in New Orleans.
