The Atlanta Braves have a way of beating up on the Miami Marlins, and it was no different last night as the Braves hosted the Marlins for scrimmage game one of two for these two teams at rainy Truist Park in Atlanta last night. Braves have dominated the Marlins over the last two seasons going 29-9, and all time at 271-187 against the team from South Beach, and they didn’t let up on the peddle last night, even though it was a scrimmage game.
Starting pitcher Mike Foltynewicz sailed through the first two innings, then the third inning he gave up three back to back to back solo home runs. At least they were solo. As happened way too often these last two seasons, Folty just didn’t have his (A) game. This makes me wonder what Manager Brian Snitker is thinking. He might say one thing in front of the cameras, but something different off camera. Folty also started game 5 last year against the St. Louis Cardinals where they placed seven runs off of him in the top of the first. Cardinals then ended Braves season with a 13-1 win.
Back to last night. It was 8-1 in favor of the fish when I started to put all three of my daughters to bed. I was all but enthused in watching anymore of the game until I got back downstairs and caught the tail end of Charlie “Clutch” Culberson’s 3-run double to get within one run. Braves ended up going up 9-8, but relief pitcher Chad Sobotka gave up a home run in the top of the ninth to tie it all up again. Just about 24 hours ago from the start of the game last night, OF/IF Matt Adams, who was with the Braves two years ago, received a call from the Braves that the team was interested in signing him. He made the drive from St. Louis to Atlanta and was in the starting lineup as the DH.
With it all knotted up at 9 with two outs in the bottom of the nine, Adams put a smile on all the Braves fans sitting at home watching the game. Take a listen to the call below.
The Braves had five walk offs last year with one of those walk off a home run by 1B Freddie Freeman, who by the way, was in the lineup and looking healthy after battling serious symptoms of Covid-19. Even though the walk-off by Adams doesn’t count in the books, it’s hopefully a good sign of things to come for this sprint of 60 games ahead.
