Lack of Offense Is Georgia Bulldogs Downfall

Well, it seems such a long time ago, but in reality it has only been a quick eight weeks ago. Depending on what college poll you were looking at, the Bulldogs were ranked #3 or #4, having the best defense that could be put out on the field. But things have changed drastically since the first week of the season. The Bulldogs are coming off a bad, really bad, game against the now #6 Florida Gators where they won with ease 44-28 in Jacksonville that has seen the Bulldogs drop from #5 to #12 in the polls.

The first play of the game last Saturday found RB Zamir White running downfield untouched for a 75-yard score and up 7-0. The next drive saw QB Stetson Bennett connect with WR Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint for a TD that put the Bulldogs up 14-0 as they were rolling, but that quickly spiraled downward. On that same play Rosemy-Jacksaint caught the TD, he broke his ankle…that was the end for the Bulldogs. Florida went on to score 44 points and the top defense in the SEC didn’t have a clue what hit them. In this era of college football where offenses are spread out to score bunches and bunches of TD’s, defenses just do not have a prayer.

With the Gators (5-1) win over the Bulldogs (4-2), the Gators now hold the edge to playing the Crimson Tide in Atlanta for the SEC Title next month. The only way that could change is Florida lose two more games and Georgia wins out…not likely to happen.

Over the past six years which includes this year, the SEC East has been won by either the Bulldogs or Gators.

My perspective of the Georgia Bulldogs football organization, and has been this way for many, many, years. The Bulldogs can only go so far without a 5-star quarterback. Three or 4-star quarterbacks are good, but this will not beat the Alabama’s every year and the Florida’s of this year. Georgia is stout at running backs and they are call running back U for a reason, but qb’s need to start factoring into the equation if they want to win a National Championship. Coach Mark Richt and Kirby Smart are the same. Both got the team just far enough, but can’t get over the hump to win the big game year in and year out. Why Georgia never recruited Clemson’s Deshaun Watson or Trevor Lawrence is beside me. Watson from Gainesville, Ga and Lawrence from Cartersville, Ga. And if Justin Fields would have held his pride, sucked it up and waited one year, he would still be with Georgia. But he’s at Ohio State where he can run and throw all over the Big Ten defenses that play no defense. But that’s me being a writer to decide, not AD or Head Coach.

Don’t get me wrong, Jake Fromm was great, but a better game manager than an all out gunslinger and top QB. Until Georgia starts recruiting the 5-star QB’s, look for the revolving door of quarterbacks to continue for the Bulldogs.

I predict the Bulldogs do win out the remainder of their games, but lose out of the trip back to the SEC Championship game. I predict the Bulldogs to play either in the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville or the Outback Bowl in Tampa, both games January 2.
