Prayers up for Hamlin

Buffalo Bills Safety Damar Hamlin/The US Sun

As I was putting my youngest daughter to bed last Monday during Monday Night Football between the Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals, I had no idea a player for the Bills was fighting for his life. It was 8:55pm that evening and I was saying prayers with my daughter and tucking her in for the night. Had no idea millions of people were also praying with me, but for another reason.

As I went back downstairs about 10 minutes later, I saw the ambulance on the field and thought, hope the player will be ok…but still didn’t know the extent of the injury. I unmuted my TV and was glued to what was being said.

When I finally saw the clip of Bills Safety Damar Hamlin tackling Bengals Receiver Tee Higgins, which was a textbook tackle, I couldn’t believe what I saw. A great tackle, but the hit on the body was in an exact spot that would cause injury and cardiac arrest. Hamlin stood up after tackle, then down again on the field and lay their motionless where CPR had to be given to him.

I posted on my twitter page @makirkley “After watching a little of the Bills/Bengals game last night on #MNF, one should only realize how unimportant this game that I love is.”

That quote is so true. We as fans get so excited when our team’s win, and so mad when our team’s lose, that we forget these players are no different than us. They are human just like us…get out of bed every morning just like we do. But we put these players on a pedestal because of what they do. Human life is far more greater than the game that is being played on the field.

NFL made a great decision to postpone game until a later time. No way players from both teams would be able to regain their composure and play the rest of the game. No one is to blame for this accident. Not Higgins and no other player. It was sad to hear some commentators say that it was Higgins fault and also that they should have finished the game that night. Shame on them…

Hamlin remains at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center where he still remains in critical condition. I don’t know Hamlin, and he doesn’t know me…but I lift him up to our Lord Jesus Christ.

Amen
