The Atlanta Falcons have agreed to a four-year contract with former Minnesota Vikings Quarterback Kirk Cousins. The contract is worth $180 million dollars where $90 million will be paid out over the first two years. This contract isn’t a guaranteed deal, but it is $100 million guaranteed. Cousins played the last six seasons for Minnesota.
Cousins, 35-years old, told his achilles last year in week eight, but has made a pretty good comeback and is expected to be penciled in as QB1 on opening day.
Owner Arthur Blank and General Manager Terry Fontenot of the Falcons last month hired LA Rams Defensive Coordinator Raheem Morris as their new head coach, and Morris went out and signed the quarterback that he wanted. New Falcons’ Offensive Coordinator Zac Robinson has an impact quarterback that he can work with behind center.
So what does this mean in the upcoming draft next month? The Falcons can now use their #8 pick for hopefully to improve their edge play and draft Alabama edge rusher Dallas Turner, if available.
With this signing of Cousins, the Falcons do not have to give up any draft picks. If they would have signed Justin Fields, they would be trading away picks to the Chicago Bears. If they waited for a young quarterback in the draft, they would have had to give up draft picks to move up from eigth.
This is a perfect signing for the Atlanta Falcons. This signing reminds me of the Chris Chandler signing back in 1997. Chandler took the Falcons to the Super Bowl in year two, in 1998. Time will only tell what the ceiling is for this team. Cousins also has ties to Atlanta with his wife being from the Atlanta area.
Now that the QB1 position is filled, Falcons 2024 draft needs are:
- Edge rusher
- Wide Reciever
- Cornerback
